On November 6, 2009 a crowd gathered at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington to watch as the new Delaware Sports Commission was launched with a ceremonial first pitch from Governor Jack Markell.
This ceremonial event had guest speakers including, Linda Parkowski, Chairman of the Board, Matthew Sparks, Executive Director, Professor Matt Robinson, President, Kevin Reilly, celebrated former NFL football player and renowned motivational speaker, Alan Levin, Director of the Delaware Economic Development Office, and Governor Jack Markell.
At the event the crowd, including some of the top regional industry leaders in the sport and tourism world, learned about the history of the Delaware Sports Commission, the initial sporting events currently sponsored by the Delaware Sports Commission and the types of sporting events that the Delaware Sports Commission plans to recruit. They also heard about the importance of sports and how sporting events can positively impact Delaware’s economy and community.
Governor Markell had only positive remarks and encouragement for the Delaware Sports Commission. He feels that the Commission will play a great role in bringing more people to the First State making it a better place to work and live. Governor Markell also described how sporting events provided great opportunities to gather with friends and family and build unity throughout a community. He was certain that nothing but good could come from the formation of the Delaware Sports Commission.
This event was a great success! At the end of the launch the guest speakers, Board of Directors, Advisory Members, and the visiting athletes from local schools were asked to report to the field as Governor Markell threw the first ceremonial pitch to launch the Delaware Sports Commission.
